How to Stay Fit During the Holidays
"It's a marshmallow world in the winter. When the snow comes to cover the ground. It's the time for play, it's a whipped cream day. I wait for it the whole year round.”
– Frank Sinatra & Dean Martin
Let’s be honest…it can be hard to stick to healthy eating and regular exercise during the holiday season. Everywhere we turn there’s temptation, from cocktails and treats at holiday parties to our traditional family favorites. When you mix in a busy schedule, shopping for gifts, and get-togethers, it can be tough to squeeze it all in.
The good news is you can get through the holidays without gaining weight. It will take some effort, but come January 1st you’ll be thanking yourself!
In order to greet the New Year without tipping the scale, it‘s wise to maintain your weight during the holidays instead of trying to lose. Allow yourself occasional treats and splurges and keep the scale where it is rather than trying to decrease it.
Here are a few tips to stay fit during the holidays:
Be consistent with your workouts. Even moderate intensity workouts can burn 300-400 calories per hour
Eat breakfast. People who eat breakfast tend to consume fewer calories throughout the day versus than those who skip
Keep a food journal. Write down EVERYTHING you eat. It’s proven that keeping a food journal results in better weight control
Manage your hunger. Drink water and have a protein-filled snack before heading to a party. You’ll be less likely to splurge on treats
Weigh yourself once a week. It’s a great way to stay on track with your goals
Get rid of leftovers. If you have unhealthy leftovers in your home, you’re more apt to indulge. Freeze them, give them away, or toss them. Out of sight, out of mind
Remember these tips and keep a vision of how you want to feel on January 1st. Have a happy and healthy holiday season!
In good health,
